Influence without Authority
Parking for SAO, Professional Development courses is in Garage B (1511 San Jacinto Blvd.). The Garage signage may read 1511 San Jacinto or Garage B. The elevator in Garage B is not reliable. If you are unable to walk the stairs, please contact the professionaldevelopment@sao.texas.gov for alternate parking arrangements. Handicapped parking is free at the meters around the downtown area.
A course coordinator will email you a parking permit prior to the course start date. A permit must be displayed or you will be ticketed.
Course Description
What skills do you need to successfully influence others when they do not report directly to you? This session gives you the opportunity to assess your current skills regarding influence and to improve your current performance. Influence without authority is not only about your specialist or technical knowledge, it is about your ability to communicate. Fundamentally important are your abilities to adapt your communication style to others, respond in impromptu situations, present your thoughts with clarity and persuasion, negotiate your way to a desired outcome and enhance your personal credibility and working relationships with others.
Course Objectives
Objectives:
Understand your role as an influential employee, regardless of your organizational title, and the skills needed to work with others.
Leverage your internal expertise by establishing personal credibility.
Increase acceptance of ideas through responding effectively to impromptu questions without becoming frazzled and appearing unprepared.
Analyze your personal influential style and identify ways to adapt it when needed.
Learn steps to manage resistance to your ideas.
Complete a personal development plan to move toward a more influential approach to working with others proactively instead of reactively.

Instructors
Lisa Carver has worked with over 15 cities in both Texas and Arkansas, to address their leadership and employee training expectations, as well as delivered similar courses to the USCIS, Missile Defense Agency and AAFES (The Exchange). She is the owner and president of Moxie Consulting, which is a human resources company that serves clients in the following areas: training programs, consulting, instructional design, and professional coaching.
Additional Information
TAC Rule 523.142(g) requires the CPE Sponsor to monitor individual attendance and assign the correct number of CPE credits. Participants will be asked to document their time of arrival and departure in compliance with this Rule. Additionally, attendance will be monitored throughout the day and CPE certificates will reflect actual attendance of each participant.
If you are making travel plans to come to Austin, we recommend making "refundable" air and hotel reservations or waiting until 14 days before the class to actually book your reservations. Courses are occasionally canceled or rescheduled due to low enrollment. We determine whether a course has enough participants 16 days prior to the course date. If we cancel or reschedule, we will email the participant and his or her billing contact no later than 14 days before the original class date.
